10th century
This building stands in the southeastern part of the first walled enclosure of the city, on a rock located on slopes which reach the bridge called “Puente Mayor” in their lowest point. Its walls are made of masonry, and the inner part is filled with mortar of lime and pebbles. They are up to two meters wide and are surrounded by a moat on the northern side and a parapet which contains seven solid round turrets.
Its plan is rhomboidal and can be seen three towers: one heptagonal and two pentagonal. The keep tower which had pentagonal plan, was demolished in the 19th century to use their premises as a prison. The walls top which were initially much higher, were also cut and the front door was walled up with the same aim.
The first mention of this fortress dates from the 10th century, a period in which the infant D. García led to its construction, but it has been rebuilt several times in the 12th, 15th and 19th centuries. Belonging to the first walls of the town, it has been a temporary residence of the kings Fernando III, Alfonso XI, Pedro I the Cruel, Enrique II and Alfonso V of Portugal and Juana “la Beltraneja” during her war against the “Reyes Católicos” (Catholic Monarchs). She lost in this war the crown against her aunt, “Isabel la Católica”, known as Isabella, being decisive the victory of her husband Fernando at Toro’s doors in 1476.
The castle was declared a Historic Artistic Monument in 1931 and nowadays it houses municipal offices.
