12th century
It is located within the first walled enclosure, which is considered the most important of the three the city of Zamora had at that time.
The “Puerta de Doña Urraca” (Gate of Doña Urraca), also called “Puerta de San Bartolomé” (Gate of St. Bartolomé), “Puerta de Zambrano” (Zambrano's Gate) during the 14th century and Queen's Gate or Doña Urraca's Gate during the 18th century, was the northern entrance to the walled city.
It is the best preserved of all gates, and it is so named because it was close to the palace where the queen Doña Urraca resided.
It has two different façades, and it is noteworthy the external façade. The entrance arched is flanked by two semicircular towers linked by a higher cornice.
In the church of San Antolín, there is a 16th-century painting, showing how it was the gate actually. Despite an impeccable maintenance, it is incomplete because there are some missing tops.
It was declared a National Heritage Monument.
Free entrance.
