Church of Santa María del Azogue

Benavente

13th century

The Church of Santa María del Azogue is located in the center of the city and its name is due to the proximity of a medieval market.

This building was started in the 12th century, with Romanesque style in its apse, the perimeter walls including the doors and part of the interior low structure. It was finally completed in Gothic times, as it can be seen in the groin vaults and in most of the Gothic capitals that we

The church is built in three aisles, head of five semicircular apses, pronounced transept  in plan and elevation, and two façades, the north one with plant decoration and the south one, with plant and figurative decoration,  and the bell tower on the northern side of square plan .
En los motivos de la decoración se observa una clara influencia de estilo cisterciense del monasterio de Moreruela situado muy cerca de dicha iglesia.

In the decoration motifs there is a clear influence of the Cistercian style present in the monastery of Moreruela located very close to this church.

Inside we find several sculptural samples, the most interesting one is the Annunciation consisting of the angel Gabriel and the Virgin who is pregnant and at noon the sun hits her belly. It seems to be a Gothic work of the 13th century. The patron saint of the city, the Virgen de la Vega, is also inside the church.
