13th century
This church belonged to the Order of the Knights Templar, of which can be seen their coats of arms over the southern gateway. But today church services are not hold because nowadays it houses the Museum of Sacred Art of Toro and the area called “Alfoz de Toro”, where are exhibited interesting Romanesque and Gothic carvings and sculptures.
It was built entirely of brick and its floor contains three short aisles and on the front, three apses with semicircular floor plan and large chancels. The southern nave and wall have suffered more alterations, but as a hole it has not lost its harmony. The temple framework is determined by the tower located in the northern part, which has Romanesque style and is as high as the roofs are.
The interior arches are fascinating and can be seen at the doorway pointed arches and decorative brick friezes. The Romanesque part, which has double series of arches in the apses, shows simple and slightly pointed arches in the chancel and the northern wall.
Its walls and original vaults were shuttering around and covered in Renaissance paintings, imitating the Romanesque style of the preserved earlier paintings though. This went so far as to call this church as "San Salvador el Pintado", what means San Salvador “The painted” for this reason.
This church was declared a national monument in 1929.
Among the works which houses the museum are:
- Capitals of the collegiate church of Toro and a marble capital of the Church of the “Espíritu Santo” (Holy Spirit).
- Stone statue of the Virgin and Baby Jesus, of the Church of San Julián. It belongs to the 12th century, and in it the Baby Jesus does not appear in the Virgin’s lap, but he is suspended while the Virgin holds her hips.
- A polychrome Christ belonging to the Romanesque church of Nuestra Señora del Canto.
- A 14th-century sarcophagus from the church of Santa María de Arbás.
- The images of San Juan and the Virgin of the church of Santa Catalina.
- A image of the "Virgen de la Vega” dated from the 13h century from the hermitage called “Ermita de la Vega”.
- Romanesque altar table of the church of “Trinidad”.
There are many other interesting pieces.
