12th century
Its head part has been preserved from the original Romanesque building. It was the church of a hospital or hostel for pilgrims.
This church had a rectangular nave and its cover is made of wood. It has the peculiarity that the main chapel is almost as big as the nave and is even slightly wider than it. In the 16th century was added a new nave at the southern part, which was linked to the former by two arches of different sizes opened in the original wall. The pointed-arch doorway of the former nave was used.
Aldovino was the priest who brought this dedication to Zamora, unique in Spain. He came to this city in the Middle Ages, being part of a French expedition, whose purpose was the repopulation of Zamora.
At that time, a frenchman called Bernard Périgueux or Perigord, was appointed bishop. He appointed him canon and thanks to this charge, Aldovino began the construction of a hospital which was also used as a hostel for pilgrims of the “Camino de Santiago”. This building, which was later turned into parish church, was dedicated to San Frontis, patron saint of Perigord, Aldovino’s homeland.
On the inner part of one of the nave’s wall, is preserved an epitaph engraved in stone with his name, origin and date of death.
This temple houses the Nazarene of San Frontis. His movement to the Cathedral marks the beginning of Holy Week in Zamora.
