Church of San Esteban

12th century

It was built during the second half of the 12th century and was completed in the 13th century. Originally had a nave and 2 aisles, separated by six large arches, with a tower at the foot of the nave. In the 20th century the southern nave and the tower were ruined, so currently it consists of a nave and a single aisle with 3 sections, main chapel and sacristy.

Outside is worthy of mention the northern doorway with triple archivolt, cymas and capitals deeply decorated with geometric and plant motifs, a window decorated with figurative capitals, several corbels, and the rose window which is currently placed in the gable. Inside there are many and varied Romanesque capitals, pillars and columns, showing plant, zoomorphic and anthropomorphic motifs.

Here is worshipped the so-called Virgin "Virgen del Villar", which is dressed and has remains of the 12th century, and a crucified Christ with a haging arm dating from the 16th century. It belonged to the former Monastery of Valparaiso like the “Cristo Toledano de La Vega”.

OPENING HOURS AND VISITS

The access is free of charge but there are neither visiting hours nor guided tours. 

The temple can be visited only during mass celebrations.
