Church of San Esteban

Zamora

12th century

This is a Romanesque temple. Its interior has been renovated several times during the 18th century, although the exterior remains intact.

Throughout its history it has been used as parish church, monastery, headquarters of the brotherhood called “La Real Cofradía del Santo Entierro” and chapel for the “Corazón de María” school. Nowadays it is used as a museum of the sculptor called Baltasar Lobo. Popularly known as "Los Padres", this Romanesque church is located in San Esteban square, between the districts San Torcaz, El Burgo and Lana.

Its original structure has been preserved. It had originally a three-naves basilica floor plan, with four sections each and three rectangular apses at its head part. It resembles the church of Santiago del Burgo, but with darker wood forms. Apses are straight and in the central one is the most decorated opening, with two archivolts and two capitals with plant motifs. There are still remains of the missing porch supporters and it has been preserved neither its original tower nor the naves inner structure, although the original triple head part can be seen.

The main, southern and northern facades stands out. The two latter are remarkably similar, especially for the large windows, which are placed between prism-shaped buttresses and the cornice of the facade which rests on roll corbels.

The doorways are splayed. The southern doorway, which is larger than the northern, has three round archivolts, and the northern doorway has two plain archivolts. The foot facade was rebuilt during the Baroque period, though.

The interior is covered with a vault by Francisco Castellote which dates from 1768. It is decorated with Baroque-style plasterwork. The temple was never divided into three naves and its roof was made of wood. Nowadays, it allocates the sculpture collection by Baltasar Lobo.
