12th century
The Church of Los Remedios had the original name of “Nuestra Señora de los Olleros”. It was built during the 12th century in Late-Romanesque style, but there are little remains from that time, due to renovations during the 18th century.
The temple shape is rectangular with three naves where cruciform pillars, which may point to its original vaulting remain. The central nave, wider than the lateral naves has a basilica floor-plan. The southern-wall-stone work and the typical cornice with corbels, which is reminiscent of other contemporary temples and the Cathedral, have been preserved. On the southern side, the old blind doorway allows observation of what could be the start of a bent semicircular arch. During the 18th century the northern wall was enlarged, the belfry was renovated, the southern doorway was walled up, and southern windows as well as the current access were opened.
In this Church, Saint Domingo Guzman celebrated mass during the construction of their monastery and it is said that after each celebration of the mass, the saint always found on the altar the money needed to defray the cost of the monastery works. That is why it is called “Los Remedios”, what can means “The solutions”.
Currently, it is linked to the pilgrimage of the “Virgen de la Concha” which starts at Hiniesta village and the so-called Cross of King Sancho, a rustic stone cross, which according to tradition, was erected to commemorate the death of Sancho II during the famous Zamora siege in 1072. This stone cross could be topped by a Romanesque cross in the 13th century. According to Gómez Moreno, at the foot of the cross, walkers used to place a stone in memory of the Castilian king.
