11th-13th centuries
The current building preserves from the Romanesque period some designs, two sepulchral “lucillos” (a kind of stone sarcophaguses) used as windows in the side walls, a 13th-century burial inside the church, remaining the inscription and the entire liturgical furniture. Also belong to Romanesque style, five corbels on the facade under the belfry. They are scotia, roll and pyramid shaped, and in two of them can be seen smooth lancet leaves, motifs that are repeated in other temples of the city.
It was previously located a few meters southwest of its current location. It was moved in 1967, using for the new construction, Romanesque elements from the original framework. The Venerable Brotherhood of “Ntra. Sra. Del Carmen del Camino y San Agustín” owns the hermitage and its contents.
In the inner portal there is a huge boa. It is 5m length and the tradition says that this snake was killed by a shepherd helped by the Virgin called “Virgen del Carmen”, but it likely came from America at the time of the Conquest. It houses the sculpture of “Cristo del Camino”. It is a 16th-century Renaissance work, but was renovated in the 19th century.
The Virgin has been carried in procession several times to pray a benefit, as happened the 28 April 1844, when she was carried in procession to pray the ending of drought that devastated the fields. When the procession was in the Main Square, it began to rain.
The access is free of charge but there are neither visiting hours nor guided tours.
The temple can be visited only during mass celebrations.
