11th century
Cid’s house is also called Arias Gonzalos’s Palace. It is one of the few civil buildings in Romanesque style that have been preserved in Spain. It is located adjacent to Bishop's Gate, and opposite the Cathedral. This is a privileged place in the first walled city, overlooking the Douro River.
It was given this name because, according to tradition, this was the house where the infants of Leon and Castile, the sons of Ferdinand I, where grew up under the guardianship of "Arias Gonzalo" and the Cid.
The name “Casa del Cid” is sculpted on the southern wall of the Bishop or Olivares Gate. The building has a facade on the city wall with two horseshoe-shape windows. It seems the oldest part of the building. On the facade that faces the Cathedral has a door decorated with archivolts which possibly dated from the mid-12th century. From its rectangular structure only four perimeter walls left. They are made of powerful ashlar. The general framework is made of ashlar with no other decorative element apart from those described previously.
There is a garden and a house that has been renovated several times since its construction.
In 1931 it was classed as Historical Artistic Monument and nowadays it is a private home.
Its interior can not be visited. It is a private home.
